Michael O. Colgan is a partner in the Orlando office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A. He is a trial lawyer with over 13 years of experience handling insurance defense first-party property and personal injury claims, general liability and casualty claims from intake through trial and appeal in many jurisdictions throughout Florida. In his insurance coverage practice, he provides advice and guidance to insurance companies on a broad range of complex insurance coverage questions including commercial general liability issues, professional liability issues, and primary/excess coverage issues. His practice includes providing legal advice to adjusters regarding claims under investigation. He recommends settlement strategies for litigated cases and pre-litigation settlement to insurance company executives and claims professionals. In addition to insurance defense coverage matters, Mr. Colgan also handles commercial litigation, representing entities in a variety of business-related disputes, injunctive relief matters, federal civil rights violations, and discrimination cases.
Mr. Colgan represents insureds, self-insureds, individuals, domestic and public companies, non-profit organizations, and national corporations in a wide range of complex liability involving property and casualty matters. His extensive litigation experience includes the preparation of over 100 summary judgment motions in response to roof damage, pipe leak, assignment of benefits and subrogation claims. His work spans a diverse range of legal matters encompassing the planning of complex discovery and premises inspections; researching complicated questions of federal constitutional law; defending depositions of fact and expert witnesses, and corporate representatives; the representation of a large civil rights class action challenging seasonal use zoning regulations.
Mr. Colgan commenced private practice in 2009 in Hartford, Connecticut as a civil litigation attorney assisting a law firm partner with civil and criminal cases through trial and appeal.
He received his Juris Doctor from Indiana University School of Law in June 2006 and Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in June 2002, graduating with a major in East Asian Studies. In law school, he served as managing editor of the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies.
Mr. Colgan is licensed to practice law in Florida and is admitted in the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Middle, and Northern Districts of Florida; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. His professional affiliations include Defense Research Institute (DRI), and Property and Liability Resource Bureau (PLRB).
Mr. Colgan has prepared presentations to claim adjusters on the topics of Assignment of Benefit reform legislation, developments in first party insurance law featuring Florida Supreme Court case example Sebo v. American Home Assurance and District Court of Appeal of Florida court case Hicks v. American Integrity Ins. Co.
He has working knowledge of German, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese.
