We think differently, we act differently and we are different.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of an exceptional person, attorney, leader, and friend, Sheila K. Nicholson. During Sheila’s 16-year legal career she forged hundreds of personal and professional relationships.  These relationships were based on trust, a profound awareness of client and personal needs, and powerful legal advocacy.

Sheila spent her entire legal career at QPWB.  She was an associate and became a partner in the firm’s Tampa office and was instrumental in the Tampa office’s growth from less than 5 attorneys to now over 50 attorneys in Tampa.

Peter Molinelli, the Managing Partner of our Tampa office, said it best when he announced her passing: “Sheila was a partner, leader, mentor, and most of all, a friend. She impacted my life greatly and showed me what it truly meant to be fearless, despite her illness, she still mentored and cared for those around her, Sheila did not set the standard – Sheila is the standard.”

When Sheila graduated from law school, she was presented with the awards for service and outstanding student in each section of Trial Advocacy: the Victor O. Wehle Award and the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service Award.

In 1984 she received her Bachelor of Science magna cum laude in Physical Therapy from Georgia State University, a Master’s degree, with honors, in Health Education in 1988 from the University of Alabama and in 2002, a Juris Doctor cum laude from Stetson University College of Law, where she also received a Master of Business Administration.

Sheila was a physical therapist (PT) for more than 30 years. She served as president of APTA’s Florida Chapter since 2009. She was a longstanding speaker statewide and nationally on topics of healthcare, risk management and documentation. She lectured at the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, American Physical Therapy Association, Florida Health Care Association, Mississippi Health Care Association, New Mexico Health Care Association, Florida Assisted Living Affiliation, Florida Association Directors of Nursing Administration, Florida Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, Florida Occupational Therapy Association, Florida Association of Speech Language and Audiology, Florida Association of Activities Directors, and Dietary Support Services.  She authored a book, The Physical Therapist’s Business Practice and Legal Guide and authored articles on the “Therapy Cap Exception Process and Courtroom Guidance for Physical Therapists.”

We are all grateful for having known and worked with Sheila Nicholson. She will be missed by us and by the community at large.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nicholson family, and with all who Sheila touched in the communities where we work and live.
